Mike Epps scythed his way to another sensational UK Clio Cup podium last weekend in the wet weather at Rockingham, Corby. The 2016/17 BTCC driver excelled in wet conditions to vault forward from eighth on the grid, pulling off some spectacular overtakes in the early laps, chasing down championship leader Max Coates to take second place and almost catching the leader, Team Pyro’s Jack McCarthy by the flag.
Struggling a little more for pace in dry conditions around the oval-based circuit, Epps had fought hard for an eighth place finish in the first race on Saturday having qualified in the same position, just three tenths away from pole position, showing the close competitiveness of the UK Clio Cup field.
“What a race!”, commented Epps after Sunday’s encounter. “That was much more like it, ducking and diving, different lines every lap. Loved it. We seem to lack pace just a tiny bit on a few drivers in the dry, which is frustrating, but wet conditions always level things out and it’s down to the driver a little bit more. It was great today to take advantage of that and if I was just a length or two closer I would’ve been going in hard for that win for the team. I want to get a win in the bag for them in their first year, they’ve worked hard and I’m proud of what we’ve managed as a new outfit in our first season.”
This is the second of two podiums in two consecutive race weekends for Epps, the first being a third place finish at Snetterton, this one a second place at Rockingham, with hopes to go one further in the next rounds at Silverstone on 29-30 September.
