Epps Hard Fought For More Points in Shortened Thruxton Races

Matrix Motorsport’s Mike Epps had a tough weekend of scrapping for all important championship points in the UK Clio Cup last weekend at Thruxton, Hampshire.

After a positive start to the season at Brands Hatch, coming out of the weekend 3rd in the overall standings, Donington didn’t deliver quite such luck with the Hertfordshire driver leaving 7th in the points tally.

Unforeseen issues with the series’ 2018 Michelin tyre on the harsh track surface at Thruxton meant both races had to be shortened by several laps. With a less than perfect qualifying session too, Epps starting 9th and 6th struggling to find good space on track, he had work to do.

Race one saw no move up the order for Epps ultimately, scrapping for 7th and 8th places but in the end unable to pass and stay ahead, crossing the line in 9th.

Race two was somewhat more positive for Epps and the Matrix team, running in the front pack after a good start to hold 4th place before a hard charging Daniel Rowbottom passed him into the last chicane. A podium finish was just yards ahead, but sadly the race ended early only 7 laps in due to a big incident, Epps 5th.

“I don’t feel like I’ve raced today to be honest! The time out there is so short because of the tyre issue, we’ve actually only done as many laps as there are in one BTCC race today. Despite that I’m happy to take more points for myself and Matrix, they’ve done well for a new team in the championship like this, I knew it wouldn't be plain sailing. We really need to pull our finger out now though otherwise we’ll fall too far behind in the championship. We’ll have to bring our A-game to Oulton Park in three weeks.”

Epps leaves Thruxton 6th in the overall championship standings. The next UK Clio Cup rounds take place at Oulton Park, Cheshire on 10th June and, as always, will be broadcasted live in ITV4 and ITV4HD.
