Michael Epps has taken a trio of wins in his debut rounds of the Maximum Group VAG Trophy. Entering as a guest with Team Hard Racing, he dominated the entire weekend with pole position and winning three out of three races.
Unable to practice on the Friday before the event, but with experience of the Silverstone GP circuit two weeks prior to the meeting, Epps went out to take pole position with his first timed lap in soaking wet conditions. “We were quite rushed before getting out due to some confusion with weight limits and we were bolting lead into the car as the first few guys went out to qualify, but once all was sorted and I was out there the car felt brilliant.”
Starting on pole for race one of the weekend on a still wet track, Epps was able to getaway fast and stretch out a huge 25 second lead to win, setting the fastest lap on the way. A reverse grid was in place for race two which would shuffle the top 10, thus putting him tenth on the grid.
With the track now dry, the Epps got a fantastic start to vault him to fifth place but an incident caused the safety car to be deployed for half of the race. Epps made quick work of the restart to push through, eventually making it to second with team mate John Stevens in the lead. Just three corners from the end Epps was able to sneak past on the exit of Village hairpin to take a second win.
After another re-shuffle, Epps started third for the final encounter on Sunday afternoon with a great launch to take second place around the outside of Copse corner. He then took the lead and stretched out another lead of over 22 seconds by the chequered flag, setting the fastest lap once again..
“I’m really happy with that”, the iRacing partner commented after a great result. “Not only did we improve our wet pace, but that last race in the dry showed where our race pace was relative to two weeks ago. It was great to stretch out a lead and get some good racing in too. Thanks to Team Hard Racing and Maximum Group VAG Trophy for an awesome weekend.”
Epps now looks to go for his best results yet in the VW Racing Cup at Spa-Francorchamps in four weeks time.
