2014 USF2000 Cooper Tires Winterfest Vice Champion Michael Epps has embarked on a new racing venture, signing last minute to compete in the Miltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup with Team HARD. He will contest all rounds of the 2015 season in the tin-top category, which supports the British GT and BRDC F4 Championships. Team HARD are also a BTCC team, running Keiran Gallagher in a Toyota Avensis this year.
This will be an entirely new experience for Michael, having previous experience only in single seater racing, but that doesn't halt his ambitions as he aims to be fighting at the front end as soon as possible.
“I'm excited as can be about this”, Epps said after signing with the team. “It's a new pathway within motorsport for me that I have considered before, but never jumped at. With the utter disappointment of having to sit out for 2014 after establishing myself as a championship favourite over in the states, I feel like this move is right for me. It's great to be back out on track again for another season.”
Having got to grips with the new car recently, Epps is quietly confident he can be a contender in the series from early on. “I felt pretty good in the car straight away. Compared to a single seater things don't happen quite as quickly, so I am fine in terms of reacting and responding to the car, but the basic technique for a quick lap is different and that will be the main challenge. Provided all goes well, I think we will be there or thereabouts.”
“I'd like to think Team HARD again for this great opportunity and I hope to repay it with my performance on track.”
Epps’ first races in the championship begin this bank holiday weekend (4-6 April) at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
